His lecture was extremely informative, and the best thing about it was that it made sense! On Tuesday, October 12,1999,1 was able to secure an appointment with Dr. Markham at 8:30 p.m. (Wow-a doctor who works late, how interesting!) He explained in detail what was expected of me, and he gave me a printout of my personalized Daily Menu that gave many options (including fast foods) for all the meal and snack times. I weighed in at a whopping 282 pounds, my waist size was 52 inches, my neck size was 22 inches, my cholesterol was at 214 mg, and my risk ratio was 6.5! Needless to say, I was a heart attack waiting to happen, not to men- tion the possibility of a stroke, and I was on my way to type 2 diabetes, if I didn't do something about it. After approximately 18 months, I had lost 100 pounds, my waist size was 36 inches, my neck size was 16 inches, my cholesterol was 176 mg, and my risk ratio was 1.9! I can now purchase all my clothes at regular clothing stores, not just big and tall shops. What a fantastic feeling-you have no idea! Well, to say that it was simple is an understatement; it really was quite easy. Actually, the hardest thing for me to do was to remember to eat! Sounds strange, doesn't it? For me-and it's the same for everyone-it's a lifestyle change, not a diet. Why? Because when you go "on" a diet, the only other thing you can do is go "off" the diet! So you gain back all the weight you lost and more as a result. Eatingthe way Dr. Markham suggests, three meals and two snacks at the appropriate times throughout the day, really works! I'm living proof of it! You have to imagine you're in charge of keeping the campfire going. By placing a few small pieces of wood on the fire, spaced apart appropriately, you'll be successful. However, if you throw a couple of large logs on the fire, you'll snuff it out. That's how a correct daily eating habit works versus eating the wrong way. If you do it right, your body will burn fat and you'll lose weight slowly (6 to 8 pounds per month), but if you eat incorrectly or not at all, your body will convert to "storage or conserve mode" and you won't burn fat! I also used Dr. Markham as my weekly accountability partner. His en- couragement and sometimes scolding, if I didn't do something right, was a major factor in my success! Bottom line: I owe my life to Dr. Markham and his Total Health concept. If you don't believe me, just ask my wife and children. Thanks again, Dr. Doug!
